conservation of frames
Treatments to frames include replacement of lost carving, structural repairs, cleaning of gilded surfaces, as well as build-ups (adaptation) of historic frames to accommodate conservation interventions such as updated mounting or backing.
We can also treat paper-based objects inside the frame, and do conservation-quality mounting.
case studies
Designed by William Kent for Devonshire House, this early eighteenth-century frame came to us with extensive losses to the carving and detached elements that left it vulnerable. There was also significant accumulation of dirt and lifting gilding.
We cleaned it, restored the losses with new carving, which was then gilded and toned to match. It was made structurally stable in order to accommodate artwork once again.
