conservation of paper

We carry out routine treatment to older printed paper, such as engravings and lithographs, and selected treatments to modern works of art on paper depending on the medium. We also work closely with colleagues expert in paper conservation when required, and can refer you on if the type of treatment is out of our specialism. If mounting or framing is needed, we can do that too.

Music manuscripts

This is a series of 18th-century music manuscripts that we worked on for a rare music dealer. We cleaned them, repaired tears, filled losses, and in some cases stabilised the iron gall ink. One was disbound with the original binding missing, so we created a simple pamphlet binding to store it safely.

1950s lithograph posters

These large posters came to us with tears, small losses and creases consistent with having been folded for some time. We flattened them, then repaired the tears and losses.

18th-century engravings

This suite of engravings came to us from a ceramics dealer, fittingly, and had many tears, creases, and losses. We cleaned and humidified them to flatten, then repaired the tears.

After treatment, we made an archival folder to store the prints in until the client decided whether/how to frame them.
